MY THEME MUSIC

D’Evil Eye Review

Absolute Value, the newest release from Boston rapper Akrobatik, is a very diverse musical and lyrical journey with a positive message. Akrobatik starts off with a homage to the Cypress Hill song “A to the K” and shares the same name as well as B-Real, the leadman from Cypress Hill. The first song has a street anthem feel to it and lyrical is a very powerful way to start of the album. This quality of music is continued throughout the rest of the album, especially in the production and guest appearances. With production from the likes of 9th Wonder and J. Dilla, Akrobatik is able to keep up with these esteemed producers. The track produced by Dilla, “Put Ya Stamp On It”, also features Talib Kweli who spits a nice verse but most of the wordplay is left to Ak. The diversity of the album continues on “Kindred” which is a look at the history of black culture (including first person accounts of slaver, Hurricane Katrina, and ). Although the rhymes on this song are a bit forced at times, the meaning and feeling put into the track clearly outweighs these minor blemishes (Chuck D preaching didn’t hurt either). Overall, the album has many diverse tracks but together, they all sound similar when listened to as a whole.

A few songs from the album:
Be Prepared
Front Steps II
Kindred With CHUCK D
Put Ya Stamp on it featuring Talib Kweli
D’Rating: 7.5/10

The Re-Up Gang – We Got it 4 Cheap: Vol. 3

The third installment in the We Got it 4 Cheap Mixtape series is a solid effort from the Re-Up Gang. Mostly reusing the beats of others, the Virginia based group is able to capture the listener at the beginning and the tape flows nicely. The intro, with Star Wars-like music playing in the background and flows into the first two Neptune produced tracks and then using “Roc Boys” as a base on the third track, the main subject of the mixtape (per usual of the Clipse). “Of what a feeling selling blocks of white…” is the first cocaine reference in the song and they continue over the rest of the song and mixtape. Ok, Clipse, we get it, you guys sold drugs, know PLEASE could you use your talents to discuss something else on your tracks. That being my only gripe over the entire mixtape, the middle and ending are definitely a positive. The eerie beat of “Rainy Dayz” really sets the tone in the bulk of the tape and is a highlight, along with the use of the “Good Morning” beat from Kanye West’s Graduation. The mixtape ends with a bang on the final track on the mixtape, “Real Niggas”. Over old school Dr. Dre beats, the Re-Up gang brings their best stuff at the time when it counted.

D’Rating: 8.5/10

2008 Spring Creative Recreation Collection

The name Creative Recreation speaks for itself. Ever since the brand has been around they've been known for thinking outside the box and coming up with innovative ideas for the concept of sneakers. In this spring colllection they still are using the classic Cesario model along with the double strapped Dicoco Hi's. The new colorways are subtle but are sure to break necks wherever you go. Simply Fresh. Any one of these are a def. cop, for anyone who can appreciate good sneakers. Check your local dealer. Peace.
