MY THEME MUSIC

D’Evil Eye Review

Absolute Value, the newest release from Boston rapper Akrobatik, is a very diverse musical and lyrical journey with a positive message. Akrobatik starts off with a homage to the Cypress Hill song “A to the K” and shares the same name as well as B-Real, the leadman from Cypress Hill. The first song has a street anthem feel to it and lyrical is a very powerful way to start of the album. This quality of music is continued throughout the rest of the album, especially in the production and guest appearances. With production from the likes of 9th Wonder and J. Dilla, Akrobatik is able to keep up with these esteemed producers. The track produced by Dilla, “Put Ya Stamp On It”, also features Talib Kweli who spits a nice verse but most of the wordplay is left to Ak. The diversity of the album continues on “Kindred” which is a look at the history of black culture (including first person accounts of slaver, Hurricane Katrina, and ). Although the rhymes on this song are a bit forced at times, the meaning and feeling put into the track clearly outweighs these minor blemishes (Chuck D preaching didn’t hurt either). Overall, the album has many diverse tracks but together, they all sound similar when listened to as a whole.

A few songs from the album:
Be Prepared
Front Steps II
Kindred With CHUCK D
Put Ya Stamp on it featuring Talib Kweli
D’Rating: 7.5/10
